This blog post deviates from my usual travel adventures and touches on a topic that relates to my work and countries in development that I (and you) may have traveled to:
Through a World Bank course on Coursera, over the past several weeks, I learned:

| Risk management (n.): a process of confronting risks, preparing for them, and coping with their effects |
- Why proper risk management is so important in developing countries: it can save lives, prevent crisis, and even open windows to new opportunities.

| A video on the Gomez family gives you more of an idea. |
- What the process entails
![]() |
| It's a balancing act: research of the dangers, protection against possible shocks, and insurance to repair the damage. We played a fun strategy game called Risk Horizon to help learn the concept. |
- My (our) role and responsibility in managing risk, which is where this blog post comes in.
Our final project is sharing what we have learned. Hence the birth of this post. Happy reading!
I could give you a dry run-down of the course, but the main question is why does it matter to you?
The 2008 global financial crisis, for one, is a global risk that affected people in nations rich and poor. There are certain preemptive actions we could have taken on our own to prepare for such a risk, like being financially responsible and knowledgeable, saving money from every paycheck, and diversifying our investments. But the government and private sector had a big role in contributing to the crisis and therefore in fixing it too.
Cohesive communities can create resilience and provide support like a neighborhood watch or informal credit and assistance. They can also challenge local governments to be better about risk management when they are lacking. Communities also need access to other communities. As members of my "community," this is where you come in.
By reading this blog post and using some of the resources here, you have better informed yourself about risk management. Now you can share it with others who may not know risk and its challenges and opportunities.
